Description
AIT format sets a new performance standard for high-density storage tape systems. The SDX series is the world’s highest capacity tape drive and media system offering both a rapid transfer rate and breakthrough data access times. The “intelligent” component of Sony’s AIT technology is the Memory in Cassette (MIC) and drive interface system. A memory chip containing the tape’s log file is built into the data cartridge allowing files to be accessed by advancing directly to the correct position on the tape. This helps to give the Sony SDX system a Mean Time to Data Access (MTDA) rating double the speed of current competing solutions. The SDX-300C series drive uses a data compression chip formerly available only in high-end mainframe class tape drives. The chip was co-developed with IBM and incorporates IBM’s latest Adaptive Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) technology. ALDC offers a higher data compression ration as compared to other technologies. The AIT format has been developed with the future in mind. Using the most advanced technology available, it anticipates the ever-growing demand for higher capacity storage and performance. For this reason the AIT format has been developed without any compatibility trade-offs or compromises, therefore ensuring a migration path, which will provide capacity improvements and performance enhancements for years to come.
